The Discovery Process program gives participants in introduction to psychologically-informed transformative inner work. It is called the discovery process because it aligns itself with innate movements within the human psyche to that aspire to actualize its inherent potentialities. The program draws from various bodies of knowledge and practice, ranging from psychology, sociology, and neuroscience to philosophy to various wisdom traditions, which not only point to these various possibilities, but have also traversed and actualized them.
We mine the wisdom available in these various areas and bring them into a conversation with our own direct experience, our own living unfoldment. The program accomplishes this by privileging an orientation towards that which supports these natural movements rather than having apriori assumptions about where any given individual process is supposed to go in any given moment. However, because human experience does appear to have a universal anatomy, so to speak, we are not groping in the dark, needing to discover everything anew. Humanity, collectively, has amassed a veritable treasure trove of knowledge about these various possibilities, often even situating them within a larger understanding of the purpose, role, and place of a human life in the larger scheme of things.
In this first level of the Discovery Process, students are introduced to the core principles undergirding this unique approach to inner work which I call WisdomPsych. These principles are introduced through the entry point and foundation for all subsequent explorations, namely, one’s direct lived experience.
The first level of the Discovery Process consists of five modules, each module itself consisting of six lessons. Each module shows the practical applications of each of the five core principles of WisdomPsych, and how together, and working in tandem, they provide the student with a comprehensive working model and set of practical tools for exploring their own psyche, engaging in their own inner healing, growth, and self-discovery. Later, these same principles can be expanded to show how they illumine global/socio-cultural and wisdom/ontological dimensions of human experience and life.
The first level of the Discovery Process is called “Wise-Relating-to-Our-Experience,” which can be referred to as WROE for short. Metaphorically speaking, one can think of it as a key that unlocks the door of human experience and supports the initiation of and/or continued growth-healing-discovery processes already occurring.
Taking all five modules is equivalent taking the Level 1 of the Discovery Process program. Students will receive a certificate upon completion. Students, also have the option to just take one or more of the modules as stand-alone courses and not the whole program. See below for a more detailed description of each module.
Disclaimer: The Discovery Process program is not psychotherapy. It is, rather, holistic, transformative education. That is, it is conceived and practiced as a form of human education rather than as psychotherapy. Therefore, if someone is seeking something like conventional psychotherapy, which, according to the American Psychological Association (APA), is defined as “the treatment for emotional, mental, and behavioral problems in which a trained therapist uses psychological methods to help individuals understand and manage their symptoms or difficulties,” they can do so in contexts that explicitly cater to such needs. There are many points of differentiation between the orientation of the Discovery Process & WROE and that of psychotherapy. Psychological healing may undoubtedly occur as a benefit of engagement with a program such as this, as that is often a natural consequence of one engaging in study and practices involved and geared towards self-knowledge and the actualization of human potentialities, as exemplified in the world’s wisdom traditions over millennia, but the discovery process is not psychotherapy in the conventional sense. It’s scope, transdisciplinary and integrative, holistic approach, applications, orientations, and ends are different than psychotherapy, as, for example, as defined by the APA above. This is also critical for an enrolling student to understand, as if they are intending to join such a program to address some specific symptom or set of problems, it might be a more effective use of their time to be more targeted and seek out people who specialize in treating or addressing such issues.
